There are two moments when the significance of translating the dharma becomes crystal clear to me:
The first one is right during the seminar in Mexico, when I can see the faces of my dear sangha and their responses in real time. We gather to listen to our teacher, a holder of an authentic lineage, a most compassionate guide whose wisdom and kindness are far beyond our understanding. We might be there for a variety of reasons, yet that does not matter. Rinpoche shares with us truths and instructions that have been transmitted, applied, and perfected by generations of teachers over millennia, a thread that connects us with extremely sublime beings.
Some in the audience might be hearing such instructions in their own mother tongue for the very first time, and their appreciation usually shines through their smiles. But when the teachings strike a deeper chord, something shifts; hearts open, and tears well up. The recognition that afflictions can be pacified in a definitive way is not trivial. Those tears are so powerful that I often need to focus my eyes somewhere else to keep my voice from cracking.
The second moment is quieter, but equally profound and meaningful. It can happen any time, because any day we can witness ourselves or any of our Dharma siblings meeting a difficulty with greater ease, without magnifying it or falling into habitual reactivity. Such moments are the catalyst that transforms our understanding into certainty, allowing us to glimpse the measure of our great fortune in having such a peerless teacher as well as access to his teachings.

Many of us receive the teachings in a language we can understand thanks to the dedicated work of translators. Yet translation is far more than a technical transfer from English. It calls not only for knowledge, attentiveness, and linguistic skill, but also for subtle sensitivity, the ability to truly live the Teaching, and a heartfelt devotion rooted in the wish to benefit all sentient beings. In the very act of translating, the translator is, in a sense, dwelling within the Teaching itself, and this deeply shapes their personal practice, which in turn helps to continually refine the quality of the translation. In this way, taking part in the translation of the Dharma is undoubtedly a path of accumulating both merit and wisdom.
