Buddhist Classics and Philosophy

Emptiness, Luminosity and Compassion

Khenpo Pema Namgyal, John D. Dunne

Description

In this seminar, John D. Dunne and Khenpo Pema Namgyal explore the profound philosophy of the Middle Way (Madhyamaka), one of the central traditions of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Drawing on the works of the great Indian philosopher Nāgārjuna, the course examines how the Buddha’s teaching of dependent origination reveals the emptiness of all phenomena. Through classical Madhyamaka analyses—such as examinations of causation, parts and wholes, and the nature of the self—the teachers show how this tradition challenges our deeply rooted assumptions about reality.

John Dunne presents Madhyamaka reasoning in dialogue with contemporary philosophy and cognitive science, while Khenpo Pema Namgyal introduces the traditional Tibetan approach grounded in textual study and contemplative understanding. Together they illuminate how Madhyamaka dismantles the idea that things possess intrinsic or independent existence, revealing instead a world that arises through interdependence and conceptual imputation.

At one point the course even draws a brief connection to modern science, when guest lecturer Philipp introduces the famous double-slit experiment from quantum physics, offering a striking illustration of how observation and conceptual frameworks influence how phenomena appear.

Beyond philosophical debate, the course emphasizes the transformative purpose of these teachings. Understanding emptiness loosens the deeply ingrained habit of grasping at reality as fixed and solid. As this insight deepens, it opens the possibility of recognizing the luminous nature of mind and cultivating genuine compassion for all beings.

Recorded during the 2024 Academic Summer Course at Gomde Germany–Austria, these teachings present Madhyamaka as both a rigorous philosophical inquiry and a living contemplative tradition. They offer a clear entry into one of Buddhism’s most profound insights: that emptiness, luminosity, and compassion are inseparable aspects of the path to awakening.
