Lama Tsultrim Sangpo
In 1967, Lama Tsultrim Sangpo was born in remote Nubri, a sacred Himalayan region of Nepal bordering Tibet and blessed by Guru Rinpoche. At the age of 12, he took ordination and commenced his monastic training in the then newly-built Ka-Nying Shedrub Monastery. He completed both his monastic basic training, excelling at the ritual arts, and 5 years of advanced Buddhist shedra studies. Based on his exceptional memorization of practice texts and his clear melodious voice, Tsultrim was assigned the position of chant master, or (Tib.) umdze. For more than 30 years, he has been responsible for leading the monks through an accurate recitation of their daily sadhana practices. Even more importantly, he guides the entire assembly through the complex sadhanas pertaining to the major drubchen pujas performed annually. At age 29, Tsultrim was granted permission to undertake the traditional three-year meditative retreat at the Asura Cave Retreat Center in Pharping, Nepal. Having completed his retreat, Lama Tsultrim resumed his position as umdze and helps train apprentice chant masters. In recent years, Lama Tsultrim has served as the Resident Lama at Rangjung Yeshe Gomde California guiding students and visitors in the ritual practices performed during the summer courses.
