Finding Openness Through Self-Kindness

Finding Openness through Self-Kindness: A Meditation Training in Four Sessions with Heidi Koppl

About the Training
Meditation training differs from what we learned growing up. In meditation, nothing is achieved by force or by pushing our mind to be a certain way. Rather, our meditation training flourishes when we befriend our mind, including turbulent and uncomfortable mental states. Befriending means welcoming everything that arises in the mind with kindness and appreciation.

This self-kindness lays bare the fluidity and insubstantiality of our own mental states. As we train in extending kindness even toward our self-destructive tendencies, we discover an inherent openness within, soft at its core and radiant toward everything.

Self-kindness is not only applicable when we are sitting. As we train in self-kindness, it becomes an anchor for us wherever we are, no matter what we are doing. During this one-week training we will also focus on training off the cushion, integrating self-kindness with our normal daily activities, such as eating, working, cooking, cleaning, talking with friends, drinking coffee, exercising, etc. Through this practice, we will discover that self-kindness allows us to open up under any circumstance.

Heidi Koppl
The training will be led by Heidi Koppl, editor of the Tara’s Triple Excellence online meditation program, and translator for Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche. Her books include Establishing Appearances as the Divine and Illuminating the Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva. She is currently based in Gomde Pyrénées, in France.
