Life and songs of Milarepa

Milarepa and his songs: a Tara's Triple Excellence reading group

Join us in our weekly reading group on the life and songs of Milarepa! We will read two books.

Milarepa: Lessons from the Life & Songs of Tibet’s Great Yogi

by Chogyam Trungpa

In an early series of seminars, Trungpa Rinpoche used Milarepa’s life story and songs to introduce key aspects of the view and practice of Vajrayana Buddhism to Western students. Speaking from his own supremely practical perspective, Trungpa Rinpoche encouraged people to see Milarepa as an example of how ordinary people, with all sorts of obstacles and confusion, could nevertheless transform their lives and realize their true nature through genuine meditative discipline and devotion.

After reviewing Milarepa’s life story and highlighting key events in the first part of the book, Trungpa Rinpoche offers an in-depth commentary on a dozen of Milarepa’s songs, continually coming back to the question of how modern practitioners can apply these teachings to their own meditative training and path.

The Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa

translated by Garma C.C. Chang

The 1962 Chang translation of Milarepa’s songs is one of two currently available in print; a new translation was published in 2017 by Christopher Stagg. People may want to add at least one of these books to their library of important Buddhist texts.

We will provide the Milarepa songs in PDF format for those who don’t have the books. We have located a free, online version of Chang’s translation that we can read in parallel with Trungpa Rinpoche’s commentary.

Two groups will meet every Tuesday. Participants can join a group in accordance with their own timezones.
Next meeting: June 22, 2021
Times: 8pm (New York) / 8pm (Vienna)
